The last scrimmage... didn't go well.

It wasn't really expected to go well, but... it went spectacularly unwell.

The word 'catastrophe' came up once. Or twice.

Or quite a lot more.

So after the debriefing, which was endless, and handing a list of repairs off with the mechanics, which was nearly as endless, Ace has decided to take a bit of a holiday.

The fact that this includes a bonfire, well. People believe she's a little bit barbaric anyway.

The Doctor stares into the fire.

So many losses.

They could take out a hundred Daleks for every Time Lord lost and they would still be overwhelmed by numbers. Davros can afford to throw away wave after wave of Daleks and still come out ahead. How do you fight an enemy like that?

Ace has a flower.

Well, actually, it's paper, impregnated with accelerant, twisted into the shape of a flower, but the basic statement holds.

She is determinedly not thinking about Daleks.

It's amazing how persistent Daleks are, even when you're trying not to think of them. Eventually she gives up, and peers around the fire at her fellow refugee from the chaos going on down in the valley.

"Penny for'em. My supplies of tea are gettin' low, or I'd bribe y'with that too."

He looks down at the flower. "I'm surprised you're not burning Daleks in effigy," he says with a ghost of a smile.

"The people are losing hope," he continues abruptly. "Without a decisive victory to our name, morale is fading. All we can do is fall back. Again and again, fall back. Like trying to hold back the tide. Sooner or later, the ocean always wins."

Ace momentarily debates pointing out that tides generally go in both directions, but it seems... somewhat cruel.

"At least most everyone's off the planet." She offers instead. "Visited the academy yesterday, it's well creepy without anyone around."

That gets a little more of a smile.

"I can imagine."

"Bet they did that on purpose, to discourage loiterin'." She snorts, with an answering wry grin. "Or student pranks while the proctors are gone."

"Fantastic." She drawls, wrinkling her nose. "Hopefully none have hitched a ride on m'TARDIS."

He chuckles. "No, I expect not. They'd be far too afraid of your driving to risk it."

"Oi!" She gasps in mock outrage, stretching to somewhat ineffectually thump him on the shoulder. "Nothin' wrong with my drivin' - I'm a brilliant pilot. Takin' part of Tom's roof off was entirely on purpose."

She sticks her tongue out at him. Very mature, we're sure.

That's probably not what's going through the mind of that younger Gallifreyan over there who wandered closer to the fire (mostly to see what the crazy human was up to now), but since when has Ace really cared what they think?

He chuckles at her, before turning back to the fire and sobering.

"I heard back from Romana today. The High Council's overruled her. They're going to bring him back."

"... Sorry, I've evidently come in on this conversation 'bout a few days too late." Ace replies, after a fair amount of blinking and trying to suss out who 'he' might be. Other than Rassilon, but she imagines there'd be rather more fanfare about that, and Romanadvoratrelundar probably wouldn't have fought it very hard. "Who are we talkin' about again?"

"The Master. The High Council feels that we can benefit from his deviousness. Which I said was rather like curing a termite infestation by blowing up the house, but evidently my voice isn't carrying much weight these days."

Ace feels it's tragic she hasn't brewed up any of her dwindling tea reserves.

She could use some to properly choke on right now.

(And she'd be lying, lying very much, if she said there wasn't some part of her that was pleased about the news.)

(She tries not to lie to the Doctor.)

(So she'll just not mention that bit.)

"Deviousness. That's one way of puttin' it. So, what are y'goin' t'do?" Because of course he's going to do something. He's the Doctor. Even when he's a Doctor who looks more at home in Wuthering Heights than at a family gathering as the rather eccentric uncle.

"Keep a very, very close eye on him, for starters. Beyond that, what else can I do? The Council's getting desperate, and I don't know if I entirely blame them for reaching out for any opportunities. After the Rani soundly and graphically refused their request for her aid, they don't feel there are many options left."

"Besides pointin' out that was m'game plan on dealin' with a certain classmate of mine, I don't see as y'have much leeway here." Ace admits, shrugging and feeding a scrap of deadwood to the fire. "Though, y'have to admit. The Rani's refusal was a hilarious read. She has talent in political commentary."

"Brilliant mind on that one, yes. Would have been nice to have it working for our side. But she has reason enough to keep her distance. The Council burned that bridge a long time ago."

He shrugs. "Time will tell. I honestly don't believe that the Master would betray us to the Daleks. He has as much reason to hate them as any of us. Maybe more. And misguided as his methods may be, he always believed he was working for the good of Gallifrey."

Her eyes darken at the mention of the Doctor's last run-in with the Master. Right. She does owe the git a beating for that.

"Do us a favor an' don't get him t'kill you again." She grumps, poking her fire in an utterly purposeless fashion with a spare branch. "I've gotten too used t'this you."
